Out in the Crowd: Exhibit to open at ART Station this weekend

An exhibit of artwork by Brazilian-born artist Boscco is set to open at ART Station this weekend.

Boscco, who lives in Atlanta, approached the gallery about creating an exhibit roughly a year ago.

"We took a look at his body of work and thought it was very exciting," said gallery manager Jon Goldstein. "He has a sense of abandonment about his work that makes it very accessible as he relates to the everyday lives of the youth in our country."

"I do try not to buy into the prevalent tastes in 2009 of what art really should do and look like," Boscco said of his work. "Whatever you will see in the show is a representation of my vision, what art means specifically, first and foremost, to myself."

The 51-year-old said freedom to select his subject matter and materials is very important to him.

"I'm independent," he said. "I was to be a trendsetter, not a trend follower. I want to be someone that is doing really something unique, very unique artistic expression."

An opening reception for the exhibit, titled "Boscco's People," will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display from

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through May 16.

ART Station is located at 5384 Manor Drive in Stone Mountain.

Sexy, Private Habits Leading to Creativity

Choosing a mad, crazy, delusional, silly or wild mental path is sometimes the way to instigate a better attitude, especially when the world around you is nothing but chronic crapsville, ya know?

This better attitude is part of the optimism needed to exercise the so-called 'Law of Attraction' that permits positive flows of prosperity to come my way.

In other words, develop some habits that tell the Universe 'I'm creating' even if it's raining for the 15th day in a row.

One of my sexy habits (sex always gets my interest, even when I'm bored) is to be humorous, although my friends and family don't necessarily see what's funny to me.

This can actually be an act of desperate cynicism: when annoyed, I annoy the annoying, thereby becoming part of the problem, rather than part of the solution.

At times I can't resist the temptation to go nuts along with the rest of the kooky people I know and love.

But doing this too often ultimately demoralizes me, even if my sarcasm constitutes a 'Secret Window' on my unique and valuable perspective.

A better coping mechanism is to invent a romanticized view of something, especially bleak circumstances.

For this purpose, I have some sexy, private habits that drive me to produce creatively.

Capriccio mio della creativita', vero?

Some of these habits involve seeing the world through a chosen, romantic vision. What do I mean by this?

I mean that, while I may not actually be a romantic in my view of something, I might choose to impose on my perspective a romantic view, in order to see something in a reduced perspective, perhaps similar to the way a bas relief sculpture necessarily reduces some lines of the form to imply other more prominent trends within the composite piece, sort of a mental 'less-is-more' perspective.

Here's a popular flirtation with minimalism-meets-an-abstract-caricature-of-dance to help explore my idea:

Another analogy to this self-imposed perspective are those blue-blocker sunglasses, that are configured to remove one spectrum of color.

When you put on the blue-blocker sun glasses, greens become more yellow, and this exaggeration of their yellowness limits the tonal differences available when looking through these glasses.

In the same way, putting on the 'rose-colored' glasses (albeit temporarily) of a self-imposed romantic view, is like forcing myself to write according to the artistic restrictions of a known poetic form.

But the challenge, it seems to me, is to write with sufficient self-delusion as to make the romantic invention credible and complete, isn't it?

It's sort of like 'staying in character' while acting -- not cracking a smile to the audience, unless it's an editorial aside that offers authorial comment.

And my temporarily, self-imposed romanticism doesn't mean I need to dye my hair purple or go off to fight in the Spanish Civil War -- it can be as simple as the suspension of disbelief needed to enjoy a Gershwin tune:

A Return to Artist's Way Morning Pages

I used to do morning pages, i.e., after the practice advocated by The Artist's Way Workshops.

I recall after a month or so of 'dumping my brain' each morning into these pages, that I had a surge of creative energy.

I recall how I 'embarrassed' myself, writing bad (and a few good) poems and by painting emotive but awful watercolors.

But I felt really god about life back then, and I re-read some of those pages a few weeks ago and wondered aloud whether my head might benefit from returning to the practice.

In 12-step and self-help Gestalt groups I think they call this type of confession 'telling on myself' which is a mechanism to place pressure upon myself -- by telling you about this, I take the 'maybe I ought to get busy again' thought out of my head, and place it in front of the group.

Have you ever done morning pages, and what was you experience?

Perhaps your ideas will motivate me to start scribbling, again.

Ciao bambini.

Seeking Unprecedented Courage Amidst Rampant Widespread and Systemic Fear

[Pictured above: Rollo May, American existential psychologist who lived from April 21, 1909-October 22, 1994.]

"To live into the future means to leap into the unknown, and this requires a degree of courage for which there is no immediate precedent and which few people realise."

Quote from "The Courage to Create" by Rollo May; Bantam Books © 1975

“Forget safety. Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notorious.”
-- from the poetry of Rumi

It seems I left safety long ago. Or did safety leave me?

There's more to leaving safety than unsafe sex and sharing needles -- these are the regressive forms of flight from certainty -- indeed, there's even some major aspects of these attacks on safety that harbor certainty of self-destruction -- and where is the courage in that?

And sorry to even mention former President G.W. Bush here, but another regressive flight was the so-called 'War on Terror'. But don't get me started . . .

No, being sane and sober and still choosing to flee safety is the greatest test of our courage.

Anyone, after all, can become the artistic kamikaze whilst under their anesthesia-of-choice, can't they?

As Rollo May says, "Courage is the foundation that underlies and gives reality to all other virtues and personal values."

Ciao bambini miei.
